ABYA YALA TERRITORIES OF LIFE
INSPIRING STORIES
WE ARE COMMUNITIES THAT REIMAGINE, REGENERATE AND REBUILD OUR WORLD
In this series of inspiring stories, we share the experiences, challenges and proposals of different communities of Abya Yala, who actively participate from a culture centered on the principle of caring for life, which strengthens the networked fabric, mutual support and co-creates solidarity and creative responses to the systemic crisis. These millenary principles of Good Living continue to be alive and present in the native peoples, sacred territories, and today they call us to continue strengthening this path of profound reflection and action for the changes and contributions that we require as humanity to care for life. They are centuries of historical reparation, which today invite us to continue in the libertarian decolonisation towards just, equitable, healthy and sovereign rural and urban communities.
Abya Yala, the name of our continent instead of New World, America or Latin America, means “Land in fullness, fertile land in full maturity, land in bloom” – a name in the language of the indigenous Guna Yala people of Panama and Colombia. Reviving this name of the continent is defined by consensus in the different summits and meetings of the native peoples of North, Central and South America with the purpose of vindicating their own living memory and identity, in rEXISTENCE and in rEVOLUTION. It also implies or indicates support for the struggle for the fulfilment of the rights of native peoples and territories throughout the continent, the enhancement of the current ancestral identity and respect for our ancient and sacred roots and territories for the balance of life on earth.

The community level of scale has enormous potential to influence change and is a crucial part of the development and orientation of social and economic systems towards sustainability, social justice and equity. Strong proposals to make other proposals visible to the extractivist, destructive and dominant economies that continue to colonize and impact our territories and communities. Territories with a high presence of biodiversity, water and cultural wealth of the planet
There is a growing recognition that top-down approaches alone are not enough to affect the urgent change we need, social paradigm shift emerges from the roots, from communities, from grassroots movements, from neighborhoods, and from there we also make our evolutionary contribution to horizontal systems of governance and life-centered collective decision-making.
One of the key ways Transition spreads is through inspiring stories, and that’s what we aim to do on this website. We really hope that inspiration will accompany your initiatives and share your contribution in this convergence for life.
